# 🚀 How to Configure Upsell & Cross Sell

Want to increase your Average Order Value (AOV) by showing the right product recommendations at the right moment? 🛍️

That’s exactly what **Hoppy Upsell & Cross Sell** is designed for.

With this app, you can create upsell & cross-sell offers that appear:

* 🛍️ On the **Product Page** → below the Add to Cart button
* 🛒 On the **Cart Page** → inside the cart
* 🗂️ In the **Cart Drawer** → while customers review their items
* 📌 In a **Custom Position** → anywhere in your theme using an app block

This guide walks you through creating your first upsell campaign end-to-end — from picking a placement to publishing it live on your store ✨

---

# **⚠️ Before You Begin**

For any upsell or cross-sell offer to appear on your storefront, the **app embed** must be enabled inside your Shopify theme.

Go to:

**Shopify Admin → Sales Channels → Online Store → Themes → Edit theme → App Embeds**

Then:

* Find **“Upsell Cross-Sell Slider”**
* Toggle it ON
* Click **Save**

💡 When you first open the app, the **Setup Guide** on the home page also walks you through this step with an **Open theme editor** button and a one-click verification.

ℹ️ Without the app embed enabled, your offers will not render on the storefront — even if they are published inside the app.

---

# **⚙️ Step 1 — Create a New Upsell**

Open the **Hoppy Upsell & Cross Sell** app from your Shopify admin.

Then:

→ Click **Create new upsell** at the top of the page to start a new campaign.

Your existing upsells (if any) are listed on the same page, where you can also publish, unpublish, duplicate, or delete them.

---

# **📍 Step 2 — Choose Your Placement**

Next, you’ll be asked where the offer should appear.

There are 4 available placement types:

* **Product Page** → Shows upsell & cross-sell blocks below the Add to Cart button. Great for “Frequently Bought Together” style recommendations.
* **Cart Page** → Prompts customers to add more while reviewing their cart.
* **Cart Drawer** → Shows offers inside the slide-out cart drawer, right before checkout.
* **Custom Position** → Lets you place the upsell block anywhere in your theme using an app block and your **Upsell ID**.

→ Click **Select this type** on the card that matches your goal.

💡 Not sure where to start? The **Product Page** placement is the most common first choice — recommendations appear exactly where buying intent is highest.

Once selected, the setup page opens automatically with 3 tabs:

* **Content** → What products to offer and what the offer says
* **Design** → How the offer looks
* **Placement** → Where and to whom it appears

On the right side, a **live preview** (Desktop & Mobile) updates as you configure your settings 👀

---

# **📝 Step 3 — Configure the Content Tab**

This is where you decide **what** you’re offering. You’ll land here first after choosing a placement.

---

## **🏷️ Upsell Name**

An internal name for your campaign — customers will never see it.

Use something recognizable, such as:

* Summer Accessory Upsell
* Black Friday Cross-Sell
* Post-Purchase Booster

💡 Good naming makes it much easier to manage multiple campaigns later.

---

## **🛍️ Select Upsell Products**

This setting controls **which products** get recommended. There are 4 options:

### **🤖 AI Upsell (Frequently Bought Together)**

Automatically recommends products powered by Shopify’s product recommendations.

When selected, an additional choice appears:

* **Upsell Related Products** → Similar items to the one being viewed
* **Upsell Complementary Products** → Items that pair well with it

ℹ️ AI recommendations use the related/complementary products you’ve set in Shopify’s free **Search & Discovery** app. A shortcut button is shown in the app so you can open it and configure recommendations there.

### **📦 Upsell Specific Products**

Hand-pick exact products to offer. Selecting this reveals a **Select Products** button that opens Shopify’s product picker — perfect for promoting a specific item or clearing inventory.

### **🗃️ Upsell Specific Collections**

Recommend products from entire collections. Selecting this reveals a **Select Collections** button.

### **🔁 Upsell Same Product (As on Product Page)**

Offers the same product the customer is currently viewing — useful for encouraging quantity increases or variant add-ons.

---

## **⚙️ Additional Content Settings**

Below the product selection, a few more settings fine-tune how the offer behaves:

* **Auto Slide Upsell by Interval** → When **Enabled**, the product slider rotates automatically. An **Interval Duration** field appears where you can set the rotation speed in seconds. ℹ️ Auto-slide automatically pauses as soon as a customer clicks the left/right navigation arrows.
* **Upsell Title** → The heading shown above the recommendations (e.g. *“Frequently bought together”* or *“Complete your look”*). A rich text editor is available for basic formatting.
* **Max No. of Products** → Only appears for **AI Upsell** and **Specific Collections**. Controls how many products are included in the slider (default 3, up to 10\) — customers swipe or use the arrows to browse them one at a time.
* **Call to Action Button** → Choose between:
  * **Add to Cart** → Adds the product directly to the cart 🛒
  * **View Product** → Takes the customer to the product page
* **Button Text (Before adding to cart)** → e.g. *Add to Cart*
* **Button Text (After adding to cart)** → Shown once the item is added, e.g. *Add Another* — encourages customers to keep adding more ✨

🌐 **Translations:** If your store sells in multiple languages, you can translate the upsell title and button texts per language directly from the Content tab. See the dedicated guide: Translation

→ Once your content looks good, click **Continue to Design** (or open the **Design** tab directly).

---

# **🎨 Step 4 — Design Tab (Brief Overview)**

The **Design** tab controls how your upsell block looks — background colors, spacing, typography, button styling, and more.

You don’t need to change anything here to go live — the default design works out of the box and the live preview shows exactly how it will appear.

For a full walkthrough of every styling option, see: Design & Styling

---

# **📌 Step 5 — Choose Where It Appears (Placement Tab)**

The **Placement** tab decides **where** and **when** your offer shows up. Only the essentials are covered here — advanced rules have their own dedicated guide.

---

## **👀 Display On (Include)**

This is the most important placement setting — it defines which pages show your offer.

The available options depend on the placement type you chose in Step 2:

**For Product Page / Custom Position:**

* **All products** → Shows on every product page
* **Specific products** → Reveals a **Select product** button to pick exact pages
* **All products in specific collections** → Reveals a **Select collection** button
* **All products with specific tags** → Reveals a field to enter tags (comma-separated)
* **Custom position** → Places the block via an app block in your theme editor

**For Cart Page / Cart Drawer:**

* **Cart Page** / **Cart Drawer** → Shows at the default position in the cart
* **Custom position** → Places the block via an app block

ℹ️ Custom placement is only available for the Product Page and Cart Page.

### **📌 Custom Position — Upsell ID & Code Snippet**

When you select **Custom position**, the app shows your **Upsell ID** and a ready-to-copy **code snippet** after saving. You’ll paste these into your theme editor’s app block to control the exact position of the offer.

For the full walkthrough, see: 🔎 How to Find Upsell ID?

---

## **🚫 Don’t Display On (Exclude)**

Use this to hide the offer from specific pages:

* **Don’t exclude any product page** (default)
* **Don’t show on product pages in specific collections** → Reveals a **Select Collections** button
* **Don’t show on specific product pages** → Reveals a **Select Products** button

💡 Exclusions are handy when most products should show the offer but a few (like gift cards) shouldn’t.

---

## **🎯 Display Only When (Conditions)**

Control exactly when the offer becomes visible:

* ✅ **Always Display** (default)
* **Minimum number of orders** → Reveals a field for the order count
* **Show once per customer**
* **Cart value is below** → Reveals a max cart value field
* **Last order was more than X days ago** → Reveals value \+ unit (Days / Weeks / Months)
* **Last order was within the last X days** → Reveals value \+ unit (Days / Weeks / Months)

⚠️ When **Always Display** is selected, no other conditions can be combined with it — deselect it first to build conditional rules.

The Placement tab also includes **Time-on-site targeting**, **Customer targeting** (login status, tags, amount spent), and **Geolocation targeting** (specific countries). These are covered in detail in the dedicated guide: 🎯 Advanced Targeting Options for Upsell & Cross Sell

---

# **💾 Step 6 — Save vs Publish**

This is a key distinction to understand:

* **Save** → Stores your configuration, but the offer is **not visible** on your storefront yet. As soon as you change any setting, the **Save bar** appears at the top — click **Save** to keep your changes or **Discard** to revert them.
* **Publish** → Makes the offer **live** on your storefront (as long as the app embed is enabled). Use the **Publish** button in the top-right corner of the page.

ℹ️ A new upsell starts as **Not published** — always click **Publish** after saving when you’re ready to go live.

From the same page you can later:

* **Unpublish** → Takes the offer off the storefront without deleting it
* **Duplicate** → Creates a copy of the campaign
* **Delete** → Permanently removes it

The badge next to the campaign name always shows the current status: **Published** ✅ or **Not published**.

---

# **✅ Step 7 — Confirm It’s Live**

Right after publishing, a confirmation banner appears at the top of the page:

* If the **app embed is enabled** → you’ll be asked to confirm the offer is visible, with buttons to **Open Store** and verify everything looks right.
* If the **app embed is NOT enabled** → you’ll see an **Enable App Embed** button that takes you directly to the right spot in your theme editor.

For **Custom position** campaigns, an **Add App Block** button also appears, which opens the theme editor so you can place the block exactly where you want it.

If your offer isn’t appearing after publishing, see: Upsell & Cross Sell is Not Showing on My Store \[Fixed\]

---

# **🎉 Final Result**

Once configured and published, your upsell & cross-sell offer will appear automatically on the selected pages:

✅ Customers see relevant product recommendations while shopping ✅ Offers appear on product pages, cart page, cart drawer, or custom positions ✅ Add to Cart buttons work directly inside the upsell block ✅ Conditions and exclusions make sure the right shoppers see the right offer ✅ Your Average Order Value gets a natural boost 📈

A well-placed upsell campaign is one of the simplest ways to grow revenue from the traffic you already have ✨
