🌍 How to Add a Language in a Shopify Store

Shopify allows merchants to add multiple storefront languages to better support international customers and provide a more localized shopping experience ✨

Once additional languages are added to your Shopify store, apps like Hoppy Free Shipping can also use those languages for translated storefront content.

⚠️ Before You Begin

Make sure your Shopify store supports multiple languages.

ℹ️ Important:

If some Shopify settings or screens look different, Shopify may have updated parts of their interface.

For the latest Shopify language management steps, you can also refer to Shopify’s official documentation.

🛠️ Step 1 — Install Shopify Translate & Adapt

Before adding translations, make sure you have the Shopify Translate & Adapt app installed from the Shopify App Store.

This app helps Shopify stores:

  • 🌍 Manage multiple languages
  • ✍️ Translate storefront content
  • ⚙️ Configure localization settings

⚙️ Step 2 — Open Shopify Language Settings

From your Shopify Admin:

→ Go to Settings

→ Open Languages

This section controls all storefront languages available in your Shopify store.

➕ Step 3 — Add a New Language

Inside the Languages section:

→ Click Add Language

This opens the language selection modal.

🌐 Step 4 — Select the Language

Inside the Add Language modal:

→ Select the language you want to add

→ Click Next

Shopify will then prepare the selected language for your storefront.

🔗 Step 5 — Assign the Language to a Domain

After selecting the language, Shopify will ask which domain should support the selected language.

→ Toggle the domain where you want the language enabled

→ Click Done

This allows the selected language to become available for that storefront domain.

✍️ Step 6 — Open the Translation Section

Once the language is added:

→ Locate the newly-added language

→ Click Translate

ℹ️ Important:

This step is only required if you want to translate additional storefront content manually.

If you only need the language added for app translations, you may skip directly to publishing the language.

🌍 Step 7 — Add Storefront Translations

Inside the Translate section, Shopify allows you to:

  • ✍️ Add custom translations manually
  • 🤖 Use Auto-Translate

Once translations are ready:

→ Click Translate

→ Or, click Translate and Publish

depending on your preferred workflow.

⚠️ Important:

Auto-translation may take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours depending on the size of your Shopify store.

🚀 Step 8 — Publish the Language

If not already published, return to the Languages settings.

Then:

→ Click the three-dots menu beside the newly-added language

→ Optionally click Preview to review the storefront

→ Click Publish

Once published, customers will be able to access your storefront in the selected language 🌍

🎉 Final Result

Once configured successfully:

✅ Your Shopify store supports multiple languages

✅ Customers can browse the storefront in their preferred language

✅ Apps supporting translations can now use the added language

✅ Storefront experience becomes more localized and international-friendly ✨
