🎯 How to Manually Choose Which Products Get Recommended
Want full control over exactly which products appear inside your upsell & cross-sell widget? 🛍️
That’s exactly what the manual product selection options in Hoppy Upsell & Cross Sell are designed for.
Instead of letting Shopify decide what to recommend, you can hand-pick:
- 🏷️ Specific products → show the exact products you choose
- 🗂️ Specific collections → show products pulled from collections you choose
This is perfect when you want to promote high-margin items, clear out inventory, or build carefully curated product pairings ✨
🤔 Manual vs Automatic Recommendations
Before starting, it helps to know there are two ways recommendations can work:
- AI Upsell (Frequently Bought Together) → Shopify automatically suggests related or complementary products for each product page
- Manual selection (this guide) → you choose the exact products or collections yourself
💡 If you’d rather let Shopify generate recommendations automatically, check out 🤖 How to Recommend Products Based on What Customers Frequently Buy Together instead.
Manual selection is the better choice when you want predictable, curated offers — for example, always showing a matching phone case whenever a customer views a specific phone 📱
✅ Before You Begin
Make sure the following are ready:
- The Upsell Cross-Sell Slider app embed is enabled in your theme → Shopify Admin → Online Store → Themes → Edit theme → App Embeds → Upsell Cross-Sell Slider → ON → Save
- The products or collections you want to recommend already exist in your Shopify catalog
- You know where you want the widget to appear (product page, cart page, cart drawer, or a custom position)
ℹ️ If the widget doesn’t appear on your storefront after publishing, see Upsell & Cross Sell is Not Showing on My Store [Fixed].
🛠️ Step 1 — Create a New Upsell
Open the Hoppy Upsell & Cross Sell app from your Shopify admin.
→ Click Create new upsell in the top-right corner.
Then choose where the widget should appear:
- Product page → below the Add to Cart button
- Cart Page → inside the cart page
- Cart Drawer → inside the sliding cart
- Custom Position → anywhere, using app blocks in the theme editor
→ Click Select this type on the placement you want.
The setup page will open automatically, landing you on the Content tab.
🏷️ Step 2 — Name Your Upsell
At the top of the Content tab, enter an Upsell Name.
This name is for internal purposes only — customers will never see it.
Use something recognizable, such as:
- Summer Accessory Bundle
- Phone Case Cross-Sell
- Clearance Picks
💡 Good internal naming makes it much easier to identify setups later, especially if you run different recommendations for different products.
🛒 Step 3 — Choose How Products Get Recommended
Inside the Content tab, find the Select upsell products section.
Here you decide where the recommended products come from. There are 4 options — this guide focuses on the two manual ones.
🏷️ Option A — Upsell Specific Products
Choose Upsell Specific Products to hand-pick the exact products customers will see.
Then:
- Click the Select Products button
- Shopify’s product picker will open — use the search bar to find products by name
- Tick the checkbox next to each product you want to recommend
- Click Select to confirm
Your chosen products will appear as a bulleted list directly below the button, so you can always double-check what’s selected ✅
ℹ️ The picker selects whole products, not individual variants. If a product has multiple variants, customers choose their variant directly inside the widget on the storefront.
Example
Selling cameras? You might manually select:
- Camera Tripod
- Memory Card 128GB
- Camera Bag
Every customer who sees this upsell will be offered exactly these products — nothing more, nothing less 🎯
🗂️ Option B — Upsell Specific Collections
Choose Upsell Specific Collections to recommend products pulled from one or more collections.
Then:
- Click the Select Collections button
- Search and select the collections you want
- Click Select to confirm
The widget will randomly pull products from your selected collections on the storefront.
🔢 Max No. of Products
When collections are selected, an extra field called Max No. of Products appears.
This controls how many products are shown inside the widget (default: 3, maximum: 10).
Example
Select your “Winter Accessories” collection and set Max No. of Products to 4 — customers will see 4 random picks from that collection ❄️
💡 Collections are great when your catalog changes often — add a product to the collection in Shopify and it automatically becomes eligible for the upsell, no app changes needed.
📍 Step 4 — Choose Which Products Trigger the Upsell
Now decide where your manually chosen recommendations appear.
Switch to the Placement tab and open the Display On (Include) section.
Use the Search placement dropdown to pick one of the following:
- All products → the upsell shows on every product page in your store
- Specific products → the upsell shows only on product pages you choose (click Select product to pick them with the same search picker)
- All products in specific collections → shows on product pages belonging to chosen collections
- All products with specific tags → shows on product pages carrying tags you type in (comma-separated, then click Add)
🔀 Per-Product vs Global Recommendations
This is where manual selection becomes really powerful 💪
- Global recommendations → choose All products in Placement. Every product page shows the same manually selected products. Great for storewide pushes, like promoting a bestseller everywhere.
- Per-product recommendations → choose Specific products in Placement and pick your trigger products. The upsell only appears on those product pages. To give different recommendations for different products, simply create one upsell per trigger product (or per group of similar products).
Example
- Upsell 1 → Trigger: “Running Shoes” → Recommends: “Running Socks”, “Shoe Cleaner”
- Upsell 2 → Trigger: “Yoga Mat” → Recommends: “Yoga Block”, “Carry Strap”
Each product page now shows its own perfectly matched recommendations ✨
⚠️ Important: If you target Specific products but don’t select any, you’ll see a “Select at least one product.” error when saving.
🚫 Optionally — Exclude Products
Still in the Placement tab, the Don’t display On (Exclude) section lets you hide the upsell from specific product pages or entire collections, even when using a broad include rule like All products.
This is handy for excluding low-margin or out-of-season items from a storewide upsell.
💾 Step 5 — Save & Publish
Once your products and placement are configured:
- Click Save in the save bar at the top of the screen
- Click Publish in the page header to make the upsell live
You’ll see a confirmation message, and the widget will start appearing on your storefront 🚀
ℹ️ Changes to the Design tab (colors, fonts, spacing) are covered in Design & Styling, and storefront text translations are covered in Translations.
⚠️ Important Notes
- Switching recommendation types clears your selection → if you pick products and then change to a different option (like AI Upsell), your selected products are removed and you’ll need to select them again.
- Re-opening the picker replaces your list → clicking Select Products again and confirming will replace the entire previous selection with the new one, so re-select everything you want to keep.
- Select at least one product → with Upsell Specific Products, the widget has nothing to display if no products are selected, so always confirm your list appears below the button before saving.
- Collections show random products → with Upsell Specific Collections, products are picked randomly from the collection on each page load. Use Specific Products if you need a fixed, predictable list.
🎉 Final Result
Once configured successfully:
✅ Customers see exactly the products you hand-picked
✅ Recommendations appear only on the trigger products you targeted
✅ Different products can show different, perfectly matched recommendations
✅ Your offers stay predictable, curated, and fully under your control ✨
Using manual product selection the right way can significantly improve both conversion rates and Average Order Value — because the right offer, on the right product page, always wins 🚀
