πŸš— How to configure Appointment Booking service for rentals

Rentals in Hoppy Appointments use Multiday Booking. This lets customers reserve an item, space, or property for a range of dates β€” like a camera kit, event venue, vacation home, car, or tool library.

Instead of picking a single time slot, the customer chooses a start date and an end date. The app handles the rest: counting days or nights, applying your pricing rules, and blocking the rental period on your calendar.

This guide walks you through setting up a rental service from start to finish.

⚠️ Before You Begin

Before creating a rental service, make sure you have:

  • The Hoppy Appointments app installed on your Shopify store
  • A Shopify product to connect to the rental
  • A clear idea of how you want to price the rental:
    • Per day or per night?
    • Flat rate or multiplied by the number of days?

πŸ’‘ The booking type is set when the service is created and cannot be changed later. If you are unsure whether multiday is right for your rental, see Appointment Bookings β€” Types of Bookings Explained first.

πŸ› οΈ Step 1 β€” Create a Rental Service

  1. Open the Hoppy Appointments app
  2. Go to Services
  3. Click New Service
  4. On the Pick a service type page, select Multiday booking
  5. Click Create service

You’ll be taken to the service editor. The booking type is already set to multiday, which is the right type for rentals.

πŸ› οΈ Step 2 β€” Configure the Booking Page

Start in the General tab.

  1. Enter a Service name and Service description that explain what is being rented
  2. Connect the service to a Shopify product
  3. Set a Meeting location if needed:
    • In person / At location for pickups or property addresses
    • Custom for pickup instructions or delivery notes
    • None if the location is handled separately
  4. Add any custom contact questions you need, such as:
    • Driver’s license number
    • Number of guests
    • Delivery address
    • Special requests

These questions appear after the customer selects their rental dates.

πŸ› οΈ Step 3 β€” Configure Rental Pricing

Still in the General tab, find the Multiday settings card. These two settings control how your rental is priced and counted.

πŸ“… Day or Night Booking

Choose how the date range is counted:

  • Day booking β€” a rental from the 10th to the 11th counts as 2 days
  • Night booking β€” a rental from the 10th to the 11th counts as 1 night

Use Day booking for equipment rentals, tool libraries, venue hire, or anything counted by the calendar day.

Use Night booking for vacation rentals, hotel rooms, campervans, or anything counted by overnight stays.

Example

A customer books a camera kit from Monday to Wednesday:

  • With Day booking β†’ 3 days charged
  • With Night booking β†’ 2 nights charged

πŸ’° Fixed Quantity

This controls whether the product price is multiplied by the number of days or nights.

  • Enabled β†’ the customer pays a flat price no matter how long they rent. Use this for flat-rate rentals like "Weekend venue hire" or "3-day festival pass."
  • Disabled β†’ the customer pays the product price multiplied by the number of days/nights. Use this for nightly or daily rates like "$80 per night" or "$50 per day."

Example

If your product is priced at $80 per day and the customer rents for 3 days:

  • Fixed quantity off β†’ total is $240
  • Fixed quantity on β†’ total stays $80

πŸ› οΈ Step 4 β€” Set Availability

Go to the Availability tab.

Availability mode

Choose how availability is managed:

  • Availability per service β€” one shared calendar for the rental item or space
  • Availability per teammate β€” each teammate has their own rental calendar. Useful if different staff manage different properties or vehicles.

πŸ•’ Available Hours

Set the fixed check-in and check-out times that apply to each day of the rental.

For example:

  • Check-in at 3:00 PM
  • Check-out at 11:00 AM

Customers do not pick individual times. These hours are used for the entire rental period and appear in confirmations and calendar events.

πŸ“ Minimum and Maximum Rental Days

Set the shortest and longest rentals customers can book:

  • Minimum bookable days β€” the shortest allowed rental
  • Maximum bookable days β€” the longest allowed rental

Example

If you set minimum to 2 and maximum to 14, customers can book rentals between 2 and 14 days or nights.

Use a minimum to avoid single-day bookings that are not worth the logistics. Use a maximum to prevent someone from locking up an item for too long.

πŸ“† Availability Rules

Add the days or date ranges when bookings are allowed:

  • Weekly recurring hours β€” for example, available every Monday through Saturday
  • Date-specific availability β€” for special seasons or limited openings
  • Blocked dates β€” for maintenance, holidays, or days the rental is already reserved

You can also set Look ahead to limit how far in advance customers can start a rental.

πŸ› οΈ Step 5 β€” Configure Payment and Approval

Go to the Payment tab.

Rental services are created with Pay to Book enabled by default. Here you can:

  • Keep Pay to Book if customers must pay when they reserve
  • Switch to Book without pay if payment is handled separately (for example, invoiced later or paid on pickup)
  • Choose Automatically accept bookings or require manual approval
  • Enable partial payments if you want customers to pay a deposit upfront

For more details on payment options, see Appointment Bookings β€” All Payment Options Explained.

πŸ› οΈ Step 6 β€” Save and Test

  1. Click Save at the top of the service page
  2. Make sure the Appointment Bookings app embed is enabled in your Shopify theme
  3. Preview the booking widget on your storefront
  4. Select a start date and an end date
  5. Confirm the total days or nights and the price look correct
  6. Continue to the booking form and complete a test checkout

πŸ‘€ What Customers See

  1. The customer opens the booking widget
  2. They select a start date on the calendar
  3. They select an end date to complete the rental range
  4. They see a summary showing the total days or nights and the price
  5. They click Continue
  6. They fill out the booking form once
  7. They pay for the rental at checkout

The booking is confirmed with the fixed check-in and check-out times you configured.

⚠️ Important Notes

  • Booking type cannot be changed. Once you create a multiday rental service, you cannot convert it to Regular or Bundle.
  • No time slots appear. Customers pick a date range only. Daily hours come from your Available hours setting.
  • Duration, booking interval, and buffer time are not used. These options are hidden for rental/multiday services.
  • Timezone and hour selectors are hidden from customers. Multiday bookings use the available hours you set in the Availability tab.
  • Rescheduling is capped at the original paid quantity. Customers cannot reschedule to a longer rental than they originally paid for.
  • Waitlist is available but simplified. The "Join waitlist when fully booked" option is hidden because rentals do not use per-slot limits.
  • The app embed must be enabled. The Book Now button and booking calendar only appear on your storefront when the Appointment Bookings app embed is turned on in your theme.

🐞 Troubleshooting

Multiday booking is not an option when creating a service

Make sure you are clicking New Service from the Services list. The service type picker appears after that.

Customers can’t select a long enough rental

Check the Maximum bookable days setting in the Availability tab. The customer’s selected range cannot exceed this number.

The total rental price is wrong

Check the Fixed quantity setting in the General tab:

  • If fixed quantity is off, the price is multiplied by days or nights
  • If fixed quantity is on, the price stays flat regardless of length

Also confirm whether you selected Day booking or Night booking, since this affects how the date range is counted.

The Book Now button does not appear on the product page

Check that the Appointment Bookings app embed is enabled in your Shopify theme:

Shopify Admin β†’ Online Store β†’ Themes β†’ Customize β†’ App Embeds β†’ Appointment Bookings β†’ ON

Customers are asking why they can’t pick a check-in time

Rental bookings use the fixed Available hours from the Availability tab. Customers do not choose individual times. Update those hours if you want different check-in/check-out times.

πŸŽ‰ Final Result

Once configured:

βœ… Customers can select a start and end date for their rental βœ… You control whether rentals are counted in days or nights βœ… You control whether the price is per day/night or a flat rate βœ… Availability, blocked dates, and check-in/check-out hours are respected βœ… Payment is collected through Shopify checkout βœ… Your rental calendar stays protected from conflicts and overbooking
