๐ณ How to configure Partial Payments in Appointment Bookings App
Partial payments let you collect a deposit when the customer books and charge the remaining balance later. This is useful for high-value appointments, event registrations, rentals, or any service where customers prefer to pay in installments.
This guide walks you through enabling deposits, choosing how the balance is collected, and making sure customers see the deposit option at checkout.
โ ๏ธ Before You Begin
Before configuring partial payments, make sure you have:
- The Hoppy Appointments app installed on your Shopify store
- A paid Shopify plan that supports checkout and subscriptions
- A service configured with Pay to Book enabled
- Access to your Shopify admin for collecting remaining balances
๐ก Partial payments only work with Pay to Book. They are not available for Book without pay services or Shopify POS bookings.
๐ ๏ธ Step 1 โ Open the Payment Tab
- Open the Hoppy Appointments app
- Go to Services
- Click the service you want to configure
- Click the Payment tab
Make sure Pay to Book is selected in the Payment type card. The Partial Payments card only appears for paid services.
๐ ๏ธ Step 2 โ Enable Partial Payments
In the Partial Payments card:
- Check the Enable Partial Payments toggle
Once enabled, the rest of the partial payment settings appear.
๐ ๏ธ Step 3 โ Choose a Partial Payment Method
Choose how the remaining balance will be handled:
Selling Plans (Recommended)
The customerโs payment method is saved at checkout. You can charge the remaining balance manually at any time, or schedule a charge and charge it manually.
Draft Order
The customer pays the deposit through a Shopify Draft Order checkout. You manually send an invoice for the remaining balance later.
๐ก Selling Plans are usually easier because the customerโs payment method is already on file. Draft Orders give you more manual control.
๐ ๏ธ Step 4 โ Set the Deposit Amount
Choose how the deposit is calculated:
Percentage
The customer pays a percentage of the total booking price. For example, if the booking costs $200 and you set the deposit to 50%, the customer pays $100 now.
Fixed amount
The customer pays a flat amount regardless of the total price. For example, if you set the deposit to $50, every customer pays $50 now.
โ ๏ธ The deposit can never be more than the total booking price. If a fixed deposit would exceed the total, the app automatically reduces it.
๐ ๏ธ Step 5 โ Configure Method-Specific Options
If you chose Selling Plans
Set Charge the remaining balance after checkout. Enter the number of days after checkout when you will manually charge the remaining balance.
If you set 7 days, Shopify will save the customer's payment method at checkout, and you can begin collecting the remaining balance seven days after the deposit was paid.
โน๏ธ You can still collect the remaining balance manually at any time from the Bookings page. The scheduled day is a fallback, not a strict deadline.
If you chose Draft Order with a fixed deposit
Youโll see an option to Multiply by selected quantity. Enable this if the fixed deposit should be charged per day or per unit.
For example, if the deposit is $50 per day and the customer books 3 days, the total deposit becomes $150.
๐ ๏ธ Step 6 โ Allow Full Payment (Optional)
Enable Give the option to pay fully or just the deposit if you want customers to choose between paying the full amount or only the deposit.
When enabled, a checkbox appears on the booking form. Customers can decide at checkout.
When disabled, every customer must pay the deposit.
๐ ๏ธ Step 7 โ Save and Test
- Click Save at the top of the service page
- Preview the booking widget on your storefront
- Select a date and time
- Confirm the deposit option or full-payment choice appears
- Complete a test booking to make sure the deposit is collected correctly
๐ฐ Collecting the Remaining Balance
After a customer pays a deposit, you can collect the rest from the Bookings page.
For Selling Plans
- Go to Bookings
- Find the booking with a remaining balance
- Click Charge remaining balance
The customerโs saved payment method will be charged for the remaining amount.
For Draft Orders
- Go to Bookings
- Find the booking with a remaining balance
- Click Send remaining balance invoice
Shopify creates a Draft Order and emails an invoice to the customer. The remaining balance is marked paid once the customer completes checkout.
โ ๏ธ Important Notes
- Partial payments only work with Pay to Book. They are hidden when Book without pay is selected.
- Shopify POS does not support deposits. POS bookings will use full Pay to Book or Book without pay instead.
- Selling Plan auto-charges are scheduled in days. Sub-day intervals are not supported by Shopify selling plans.
- Fixed deposits are capped at the booking total. The app prevents deposits from exceeding the full price.
- The customer must see the booking form. Add a custom question so the deposit/full-payment checkbox appears.
- Re-save the service after changing variants. If you add or change Shopify variants, save the service again so the selling-plan group is resynced.
๐ Troubleshooting
The Partial Payments card is not showing
Make sure Pay to Book is selected in the Payment type card. Partial payments are only available for paid services.
Customers donโt see the deposit option
Add at least one custom question to the service. Without it, the booking form auto-submits and skips the deposit choice.
Customers canโt choose full payment
Make sure Give the option to pay fully or just the deposit is enabled and a custom question exists.
The remaining balance button is missing
- For Selling Plans: the balance must be unpaid and the deposit must be paid
- For Draft Orders: the balance must be unpaid and the deposit order must be completed
The deposit amount looks wrong
- For percentage deposits, check the value entered
- For fixed deposits, confirm whether Multiply by selected quantity is enabled
- Remember that deposits cannot exceed the booking total
๐ Final Result
Once configured:
โ
Customers can pay a deposit at checkout instead of the full amount
โ
The remaining balance is collected automatically (Selling Plans) or by invoice (Draft Order)
โ
You control the deposit amount, whether full payment is allowed, and when the balance is charged
โ
All payments are processed through Shopify checkout
