đī¸ How to Setup Upsell PopUps
Want to boost your average order value by suggesting the right products at the right moment? đ
Upsell PopUps let you recommend products directly inside a popup â whether through AI-powered suggestions or hand-picked items â so shoppers can add more to their cart without leaving the page.
This guide walks you through the entire setup so you can launch your first Upsell PopUp in minutes.
â Before You Begin â Enable the App Embed
For any popup to appear on your storefront, the app embed must be enabled inside your Shopify theme.
Go to:
Shopify Admin â Sales Channels â Online Store â Themes â Edit Theme â App Embeds
Then:
- Find Email PopUps
- Toggle it ON
- Click Save
âšī¸ Without this step, your popup will not render on the storefront even after publishing.
âī¸ Step 1 â Create a New Upsell PopUp
Open the Hoppy PopUps app.
Then:
â Click Create New PopUp
â Select Upsell PopUp from the list of popup types.
The setup page will open automatically with fields tailored for upsell campaigns.
đ Step 2 â Configure the Content
After opening the setup page, you'll land inside the Content tab. This section controls what your visitors see and how they interact with the popup.
đˇī¸ PopUp Name
This field is used for internal purposes only. Customers will never see this name.
You can use any recognizable name such as:
- Summer Upsell Campaign
- Black Friday Booster
- Product Recommendation Funnel
- Checkout Upsell
đĄ Using proper internal naming makes it easier to identify setups later, especially if your store runs multiple campaigns.
đŦ Title & Description
These appear at the top of your popup and should clearly communicate the value.
Example
- Title: "Complete your look"
- Description: "Customers also bought these items"
You can customize these to match your campaign voice.
â Close Icon
The Close Icon setting allows you to control whether customers can manually close the popup.
This feature includes a checkbox/toggle option which can:
- â Show the Close Icon
- â Hide the Close Icon
When enabled:
â Customers will see a close icon on the popup
â Customers can manually dismiss the popup whenever they want
When disabled:
â The close icon will not appear
â Customers will not be able to manually close the popup using the close button
â ī¸ Important:
Disabling the Close Icon may increase popup visibility, but it can also affect customer experience if the popup becomes difficult to dismiss.
We generally recommend keeping the Close Icon enabled unless a specific campaign requires otherwise.
âī¸ Floating Action Button
You can add a Floating Action Button that stays visible on the page so visitors can reopen the popup after closing it.
Choose a position:
- Bottom right
- Bottom left
- Screen right
- Screen left
Then enter the Button Text â e.g. "Open Offer", "Get Discount", or "Learn More".
To disable the floating button entirely, select Disable floating action button.
đ Step 3 â Configure Upsell Products
Move to the Upsell tab to control which products are recommended inside the popup.
This is the core of your Upsell PopUp â here's where you decide what shoppers see.
đĻ Upsell Type
Select how product recommendations should be generated:
- AI Upsell (Frequently Bought Together) â uses Shopify's recommendation engine to automatically suggest related or complementary products based on what the customer is viewing.
âšī¸ This option will not work on the home page because it depends on product context.
- Upsell Specific Products â manually choose the exact products you want to recommend.
- Upsell Specific Collections â display products from selected collections.
- Upsell Same Product (As on Product Page) â shows the same product the customer is currently viewing, useful for encouraging quantity-based purchases.
đ¯ Recommendation Type (AI Upsell only)
If you selected AI Upsell, choose the recommendation style:
- Upsell Related Products â suggests items similar to the one in context
- Upsell Complementary Products â suggests items that pair well together
You can manage these recommendations using Shopify's Search & Discovery app.
đŧī¸ Product Grid Layout
Control how upsell products are displayed:
- Number of columns in desktop â how many products appear side-by-side on desktop
- Number of columns in mobile â how many products appear side-by-side on mobile
đĸ Max No. of Products
Set the maximum number of products to show in the upsell grid. This helps keep the popup clean and focused.
đĄ Available when using AI Upsell or Specific Collections.
đ Call-To-Action Button Text
Configure the upsell button text for two states:
- Button Text (Before adding to cart) â e.g. "Add to Cart"
- Button Text (After adding to cart) â e.g. "Add Another"
This gives customers clear feedback after they interact with a recommendation.
đ¨ Step 4 â Design Your PopUp (Optional)
Switch to the Design tab to adjust:
- Popup position, size, and animation
- Background colors, gradients, or images
- Fonts, button styles, and corner radius
đĄ You can skip this step if the default look already matches your store.

đąī¸ Step 5 â Set the Trigger & Display Rules
Move to the Placement/Targeting tab to control when and where your Upsell PopUp appears.
Key settings you'll encounter:
- Trigger Type â After Time, Page Scroll, Exit-intent, or Add to cart button clicked
- Display Frequency â Show every time, once per visit, or limit with a cooldown
- Page Targeting â Every page, home only, specific products, collections, or tags
- Customer Targeting â Login status, customer tags, lifetime spent
- Geolocation â All world or specific countries
- Scheduling â Optional start and end dates

â Step 6 â Save & Publish
Once everything looks good:
- Click Save to store your configuration
- Click Publish to make the popup live on your storefront
â ī¸ Saving alone does not make the popup visible to customers. You must publish it.
If the app embed is not yet enabled, a banner will remind you to activate it in your Shopify theme editor.
đ Final Result
Once configured successfully:
â Visitors see relevant product recommendations inside the popup
â Emails and phone numbers are collected automatically (if enabled)
â Shoppers can add upsell products directly to their cart
â Your popup respects targeting rules, scheduling, and device settings
â Average Order Value improves through smart product suggestions
Your Upsell PopUp is now live and ready to grow your sales đ
