๐ Integrate Hoppy Cookie with Global Privacy Control (GPC)
Global Privacy Control (GPC) allows your store to automatically respect privacy signals sent directly from a visitor's browser or device.
When a visitor has GPC enabled, Hoppy Cookie automatically denies Marketing and Sale of Data consent before any tracking begins. This means visitors do not need to manually opt out, helping merchants support privacy regulations such as the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and similar frameworks.
Once enabled, the integration works automatically in the background whenever a supported GPC signal is detected.
โ ๏ธ Before You Begin
Before enabling Global Privacy Control (GPC), make sure:
- Hoppy GDPR EU Cookie Banner is installed and active
- At least one Cookie Banner is configured
- The Cookie Banner is published on your storefront
๐ก No API keys, access tokens, or external accounts are required.
โ ๏ธ This integration only applies when visitors use browsers or devices that send a valid Global Privacy Control signal.
๐ ๏ธ Step 1 โ Open the Integrations Section
Inside your Shopify Admin:
โ Open Hoppy GDPR EU Cookie Banner
โ Click Integrations from the left-side navigation menu
Locate:
Global Privacy Control (GPC)
and open the integration page.
If the integration has not been configured yet, the status will display:
โ Off
โ๏ธ Step 2 โ Enable the Integration
Inside the Global Privacy Control integration page:
โ Toggle Integrate with Global Privacy Control (GPC) to On
Once enabled:
- The status changes to On
- The storefront begins listening for GPC signals
- Marketing consent can be automatically denied
- Sale of Data consent can be automatically denied
This happens automatically whenever a supported browser sends a valid GPC signal.
๐พ Step 3 โ Save Your Changes
After enabling the integration:
โ Click Save
The configuration is automatically synchronized to your storefront.
No theme edits, scripts, or additional setup steps are required.
๐ How Global Privacy Control Works
Once enabled, the integration continuously checks whether visitors are sending a Global Privacy Control signal.
When a GPC Signal Is Detected
The app automatically:
- Denies Marketing consent
- Denies Sale of Data consent
- Applies the restrictions before consent is synchronized to supported integrations
This occurs automatically before tracking begins.
When No GPC Signal Is Present
The Cookie Banner behaves normally.
Visitors can:
- Accept cookies
- Decline cookies
- Configure preferences manually
No automatic overrides are applied.
๐งช Step 4 โ Verify the Integration
After saving, it's recommended to verify that the integration is working correctly.
Use a GPC-Compatible Browser
Open your storefront using a browser or browser extension that supports Global Privacy Control.
Examples include:
- Brave
- Firefox with GPC support
- Other privacy-focused browsers
Then:
โ Open an Incognito or Private browser window
โ Visit your storefront
Review Cookie Banner Behavior
When a valid GPC signal is detected:
- Marketing consent should automatically be denied
- Sale of Data consent should automatically be denied
- The Cookie Banner may still appear for managing other consent categories
This behavior confirms that GPC preferences are being respected.
Check Browser Console Logs
Open Developer Tools and review the Console.
Look for messages indicating:
- GPC signal detected
- Marketing consent denied
- Sale of Data consent denied
These entries confirm that the automatic override is functioning correctly.
โ ๏ธ Common Troubleshooting
GPC Signal Is Not Being Respected
Verify:
- The integration is enabled
- Changes have been saved
- The status shows On
If the integration is disabled, the app falls back to normal consent behavior.
Unable to Test GPC
Global Privacy Control requires a browser or extension capable of sending the signal.
Without a GPC-enabled browser, the integration has no signal to detect.
Try testing with:
- Brave Browser
- Firefox with GPC support
- Privacy-focused browser extensions
Tracking Still Occurs
Verify:
- The GPC integration is enabled
- The browser is actively sending a GPC signal
- Testing is performed in a fresh Incognito window
If no signal is detected, normal consent handling will continue.
Banner Behavior Seems Unchanged
This is expected in some cases.
The Cookie Banner may still appear even when GPC is detected because visitors may still be allowed to manage:
- Functional cookies
- Analytics cookies
- Other available consent categories
Only Marketing and Sale of Data preferences are automatically overridden.
โ ๏ธ Important Notes
No External Accounts Required
Unlike many integrations, Global Privacy Control does not require:
- API Keys
- OAuth Connections
- Third-party accounts
The feature works directly through browser-based privacy signals.
Applies Only When a Signal Exists
The integration only activates when a valid Global Privacy Control signal is detected.
Visitors without GPC enabled continue using the standard Cookie Banner experience.
Overrides Are Automatic
When GPC is detected:
- Marketing consent is denied automatically
- Sale of Data consent is denied automatically
No visitor interaction is required.
Supports Privacy Compliance Efforts
Many merchants use Global Privacy Control as part of broader privacy compliance strategies, particularly when serving visitors in regions with privacy-focused regulations.
๐ Final Result
Once configured successfully:
โ GPC-enabled visitors are automatically opted out of Marketing tracking
โ Sale of Data consent is automatically denied
โ No manual visitor action is required
โ Consent preferences are applied before synchronization to integrations
โ No theme coding or API setup is required
โ Your storefront becomes more privacy-friendly for visitors using Global Privacy Control
The Global Privacy Control integration helps ensure that browser-level privacy preferences are respected automatically, creating a more transparent and compliance-focused visitor experience.
