🌍 How Auto Currency Detection Works

Hoppy Currency Converter can automatically detect where visitors are browsing from and display prices in their local currency.

This helps create a more localized shopping experience by allowing customers to see familiar pricing without manually selecting a currency from the dropdown.

Auto currency detection works by identifying the visitor's country, matching it to a supported currency, and automatically switching prices when possible.

This guide explains how the detection process works, what settings control it, and how each option affects the storefront experience.

βš™οΈ Before You Begin

To configure auto currency detection:

➑️ Open the Hoppy Currency Converter app.

➑️ Navigate to Settings β†’ General.

All currency detection settings can be found inside the General section.

πŸ”„ Auto Currency Switch

The Auto Currency Switch setting controls whether the app automatically detects and applies local currencies.

What It Does

When enabled, the app attempts to detect the visitor's country and switch prices to the corresponding currency automatically.

Default State

βœ… Enabled

βœ… When Auto Currency Switch Is Enabled

When Auto Currency Switch is turned on, the app follows the process below.

How It Works

  1. The visitor's country is detected.
  2. The country is matched to a currency.
  3. The currency is checked against your selected currencies list.
  4. If a match exists, prices automatically convert.
  5. The detected currency appears in the currency selector as Auto Location.

Example

A visitor from France opens the storefront:

Detected Country β†’ FR β†’ Currency Match β†’ EUR β†’ Prices Displayed in EUR

The visitor immediately sees prices in Euros without any manual selection.

πŸ—ΊοΈ How Country Detection Works

The app uses Shopify's native browsing context detection system to identify the visitor's location.

Shopify provides the visitor's country information through:

/browsing_context_suggestions.json

This is the same browsing context system used by Shopify Markets and Shopify's geolocation features.

Once detected, the country information is stored temporarily during the visitor session to improve performance.

πŸ’± How Countries Are Mapped to Currencies

After identifying the visitor's country, the app determines which currency should be displayed.

There are two matching methods.

Method 1 β€” Euro Country Mapping

Many European countries use the Euro even though their country codes differ from the currency code.

The app automatically maps these countries to EUR.

Examples

  • France (FR) β†’ EUR
  • Germany (DE) β†’ EUR
  • Italy (IT) β†’ EUR
  • Spain (ES) β†’ EUR
  • Netherlands (NL) β†’ EUR

This ensures visitors from Eurozone countries receive the correct currency automatically.

Method 2 β€” Standard Currency Matching

For non-Euro countries, the app compares the country code with available currency codes.

Examples

US β†’ USD
GB β†’ GBP
CA β†’ CAD
IN β†’ INR

If a supported match exists, prices automatically switch to that currency.

If no match is available, the app falls back to the default store currency.

🚫 Restrict Auto Currency Switch

The Restrict Auto Currency Switch setting allows you to limit which currencies are eligible for automatic switching.

What It Does

When enabled:

  • Auto-switching only works for currencies included in your selected currencies list.
  • Unsupported visitors see the default store currency.
  • The Auto Location option is hidden from the currency selector.

Why Use It?

This setting is useful when:

  • You only support specific regions.
  • You want tighter control over which visitors receive automatic currency conversion.
  • You want unsupported regions to remain on the store currency.

πŸ”’ When Auto Currency Switch Is Disabled

When Auto Currency Switch is turned off, the app stops detecting visitor locations entirely.

Instead, it relies on the Default Conversion Currency setting.

Default Conversion Currency

This setting becomes available only when Auto Currency Switch is disabled.

What It Does

Forces all storefront visitors to see prices in a specific currency regardless of location.

Available Options

  • None (Uses Store Currency)
  • Any supported currency

Example

If you select:

Default Conversion Currency β†’ EUR

Every visitor sees prices in EUR, regardless of country.

This is useful when selling primarily within one region and maintaining consistent storefront pricing.

πŸ‘€ What Visitors See on the Storefront

The customer experience changes depending on whether Auto Currency Switch is enabled.

When Auto Currency Switch Is Enabled

Visitors will see:

  • Prices automatically converted based on location.
  • An Auto Location currency option in the selector.
  • The ability to manually switch currencies if desired.

Example

Visitor Location β†’ Canada β†’ Currency Displayed β†’ CAD

When Auto Currency Switch Is Disabled

Visitors will see:

  • The Default Conversion Currency.
  • The store currency if no default currency is configured.
  • Manual currency selection through the dropdown.

Example

Auto Currency Switch β†’ OFF β†’ Default Currency β†’ EUR β†’ Prices Displayed β†’ EUR

⚠️ Important Notes

Selected Currencies Matter

Auto-detection only works for currencies included in your Select Currencies list.

If the detected currency is not available, the app falls back to the store currency or configured default currency.

Session Memory

If a visitor manually selects a currency, the app remembers that preference for the duration of the browsing session.

Subsequent pages continue displaying the selected currency until it is changed again.

Shopify Markets Compatibility

If Shopify Markets is already managing currency conversion, the app automatically adjusts its behavior to avoid conflicts with Shopify's native currency handling.

Detection Accuracy

Country detection depends on Shopify's browsing context data.

In rare situations, VPNs, proxy services, privacy tools, or unusual network configurations may affect the detected location.

πŸ› οΈ Common Use Cases

Global Store with Localized Pricing

Enable:

Auto Currency Switch β†’ ON

Select all supported currencies.

Visitors automatically see pricing in their local currency.

Regional Store with Limited Support

Enable:

Auto Currency Switch β†’ ON β†’ Restrict Auto Currency Switch β†’ ON

Only supported regions receive automatic currency switching.

All other visitors remain on the store currency.

Single-Currency Storefront

Configure:

Auto Currency Switch β†’ OFF β†’ Default Conversion Currency β†’ Desired Currency

All visitors see the same currency regardless of location.

πŸŽ‰ Final Result

βœ… Visitors can automatically see prices in their local currency.

βœ… Currency switching remains available through the selector when needed.

βœ… Restriction settings provide control over which regions receive automatic conversion.

βœ… Fallback logic ensures pricing remains stable when a currency match cannot be found.

βœ… International shoppers receive a more localized and familiar storefront experience.

Understanding how auto currency detection works makes it easier to choose between automatic currency switching, restricted localization, or a single-currency storefront strategy.
