π How to Switch Currency Based on Location
The Hoppy Currency Converter can automatically detect a visitor's location and display prices in their local currency.
This helps create a more personalized shopping experience, reduces pricing confusion, and makes it easier for international customers to browse your store without manually switching currencies.
This guide walks through how to enable and configure location-based currency switching.
β οΈ Before You Begin
Before setting up location-based currency switching, make sure:
- Hoppy Currency Converter is installed
- Onboarding has been completed
- The App Embed is enabled
- At least one currency has been selected
π‘ If you haven't configured the Currency Converter yet, complete the basic setup first before enabling automatic currency switching.
β Step 1: Enable Auto Currency Switch
Open the Hoppy Currency Converter app from your Shopify Admin.
Then:
β Go to Settings
β Open General
Locate:
Auto Currency Switch
Enable this setting.
Once enabled, the Currency Converter automatically detects a visitor's location and switches to the appropriate currency.
π How It Works
When a visitor arrives on your storefront:
- Their country is detected automatically
- The corresponding currency is selected
- Prices update without requiring any manual action
Examples
- Visitors from Japan see JPY
- Visitors from Germany see EUR
- Visitors from Canada see CAD
This process happens automatically in the background.
β Step 2: Select Supported Currencies
Auto-switching only works for currencies that have been enabled inside the app.
While still inside:
Settings β General
Locate:
Select Currencies
Choose the currencies you want to support.
Available Actions
- Select individual currencies
- Select All
- Deselect All
π‘ It's generally best to enable currencies for countries where you actively receive visitors or ship products.
β Step 3: Configure Restricted Switching (Optional)
When Auto Currency Switch is enabled, an additional setting becomes available:
Restrict Auto Currency Switch
This setting controls whether automatic switching should be limited to supported countries only.
When Enabled
Visitors from supported countries automatically receive localized currencies.
Visitors from unsupported countries continue to see your store's default currency.
Example
β Germany β EUR
β Canada β CAD
β Australia β AUD
β Unsupported country β Store default currency
When Disabled
The Currency Converter attempts to localize the experience for all visitors.
If a matching currency is unavailable, the storefront automatically falls back to the store's default currency.
π‘ Most merchants leave this setting disabled unless they want strict control over supported markets.
β Step 4: Configure Currency Selector Appearance
Even when automatic switching is enabled, customers can still manually select a different currency.
Locate:
Selected Currency Mode
This controls how currencies appear in the selector.
π Country Selector
Displays:
- Country flags
- Country names
- Currency codes
Example
π―π΅ Japanese Yen (JPY)
πΊπΈ United States Dollar (USD)
This option is ideal when you want customers to quickly recognize their region.
π± Currency Selector
Displays:
- Currency flags
- Currency codes
Example
π―π΅ JPY
πΊπΈ USD
This option creates a cleaner and more compact selector.
π Alternative: Use a Fixed Default Currency
If you do not want automatic location detection:
β Disable Auto Currency Switch
A new option becomes available:
Default Conversion Currency
Choose the currency that should be shown to all visitors by default.
Visitors can still manually switch currencies using the selector.
Common Use Cases
A fixed default currency can be useful when:
- Most customers come from a single region
- Consistent pricing is preferred
- Running region-specific campaigns
- Testing storefront pricing
β Step 5: Save Your Changes
Once you've configured:
- Auto Currency Switch
- Supported currencies
- Restriction settings (optional)
- Currency selector mode
Click:
β Save
The Currency Converter will begin using the new location-based settings immediately.
π§ͺ Step 6: Test the Configuration
After saving:
β Visit your storefront
β Confirm the correct currency appears
If you want to test different countries, consider using:
- A VPN
- Location testing tools
- Customers or colleagues in different regions
This helps verify that location-based switching is working as expected.
β οΈ Important Notes
Location Detection Uses IP Address
Currency detection is based on the visitor's approximate location using IP-based geolocation.
No location permission requests are shown to customers.
Returning Visitors Keep Their Selection
If a customer manually changes their currency, that preference is remembered for future visits.
The manually selected currency takes priority over automatic detection.
Storefront Currency Only
Location-based switching updates displayed storefront prices.
Final checkout currency depends on your Shopify configuration and supported Shopify Markets settings.
Widget Visibility Still Matters
For customers to manually switch currencies, the Currency Converter must remain visible on the storefront.
Make sure:
- Show on Desktop is enabled
- Show on Mobile is enabled
if you want customers to access the selector.
π Final Result
Once configured successfully:
β Visitors automatically see prices in their local currency
β International shoppers enjoy a more localized experience
β Customers can still manually switch currencies when needed
β Returning visitors retain their currency preferences
β Your storefront becomes easier to browse for global audiences
Using location-based currency switching helps create a smoother shopping experience while making international pricing feel more familiar and accessible. π
