๐Ÿ”— Integrate Hoppy Cookie with Pinterest Consent Mode

Pinterest Consent Mode allows Pinterest tracking to respect the cookie preferences selected by your visitors.

When connected, Pinterest tags only load after visitors grant Marketing consent through your Cookie Banner. This helps merchants maintain a more privacy-friendly storefront while continuing to support Pinterest advertising, conversion tracking, audience building, and campaign measurement when consent is provided.

โš ๏ธ Before You Begin

Before enabling Pinterest Consent Mode, make sure:

  • Hoppy GDPR EU Cookie Banner is installed and active
  • Your Cookie Banner is published
  • You have your Pinterest Tag ID available

You can find your Pinterest Tag ID inside:

Pinterest Ads Manager

โš ๏ธ Important:

If Pinterest tracking is already installed directly in your Shopify theme, remove the existing implementation before enabling this integration.

Running multiple Pinterest tags can cause:

  • Duplicate tracking
  • Duplicate PageView events
  • Inaccurate reporting

If Pinterest is loaded through Google Tag Manager (GTM), use Google Consent Mode V2 instead.

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Step 1 โ€” Open the Integrations Section

Inside your Shopify Admin:

โ†’ Open Hoppy GDPR EU Cookie Banner

โ†’ Click Integrations

Locate:

Pinterest Consent Mode

and open the integration page.

If the integration has not been configured yet, the status will display:

โ†’ Off

โš™๏ธ Step 2 โ€” Enable the Integration

Inside the Pinterest Consent Mode page:

โ†’ Toggle Integrate with Pinterest Consent Mode to On

Once enabled:

  • The status changes to On
  • Pinterest tracking becomes available
  • Additional Pinterest settings become visible

After enabling the integration, the Pinterest Tag ID field will appear.

๐Ÿ”‘ Step 3 โ€” Enter Your Pinterest Tag ID

Locate:

Pinterest Tag ID

Paste your Pinterest Tag ID into the field provided.

Example

1234567890123

โš ๏ธ Only enter the numeric Tag ID.

Do not include:

  • URLs
  • Script tags
  • Tracking code snippets

Double-check for extra spaces before saving.

๐Ÿ’พ Step 4 โ€” Save Your Changes

After entering your Tag ID:

โ†’ Click Save

The configuration is automatically synchronized to your storefront.

No additional theme edits or manual script installation are required.

๐Ÿ”„ How the Integration Works

Once enabled, Pinterest tracking responds automatically to visitor consent preferences.

If the visitor accepts Marketing cookies:

โœ… Pinterest tracking loads

โœ… Pinterest PageView events can fire

โœ… Conversion tracking becomes available

โœ… Audience building and advertising measurement can operate normally

This allows Pinterest campaigns to collect approved visitor interactions.

If the visitor declines Marketing cookies:

โŒ Pinterest tracking does not load

โŒ Pinterest events are blocked

โŒ Audience and advertising tracking remain disabled

This helps ensure tracking aligns with visitor consent choices.

If a visitor later updates their preferences:

  • Pinterest tracking can be enabled
  • Pinterest tracking can be disabled

depending on the updated Marketing consent selection.

The integration automatically adjusts tracking behavior accordingly.

๐Ÿงช Step 5 โ€” Verify the Integration

After saving, it's recommended to verify that the integration is working correctly.

โ†’ Open your storefront in an Incognito or Private browser window

โ†’ Decline Marketing cookies

Then:

โ†’ Open Developer Tools

โ†’ Open the Network tab

โ†’ Search for:

pinimg

or

core.js

Expected Result

No Pinterest tracking requests should appear.

This confirms that tracking is being blocked correctly.

Repeat the test using a fresh Incognito window.

This time:

โ†’ Accept Marketing cookies

โ†’ Refresh the page if necessary

Then:

โ†’ Open the Network tab

โ†’ Search for:

pinimg

or

core.js

Expected Result

Pinterest tracking scripts should load successfully.

You should also see a PageView event being triggered automatically.

Verify Using Browser Console

Open Developer Tools and switch to the Console.

Enter:

pintrk

Expected Result

If consent has been granted, the Pinterest tracking object should be available and initialized successfully.

โš ๏ธ Common Troubleshooting

Pinterest Tag ID Field Is Missing

The Pinterest Tag ID field only appears after the integration is enabled.

Verify:

โ†’ Integrate with Pinterest Consent Mode is turned On

Once enabled, the field becomes visible automatically.

This usually means Pinterest is installed elsewhere.

Check:

  • Shopify theme code
  • Theme App Extensions
  • Other Shopify apps
  • Custom tracking scripts

Remove duplicate Pinterest installations and allow Hoppy Cookie to manage tracking directly.

Verify:

  • The Pinterest Tag ID is correct
  • The integration is enabled
  • Changes have been saved
  • Marketing consent has been accepted

A mistyped Tag ID can prevent Pinterest tracking from loading correctly.

Duplicate PageView Events

Duplicate PageView events generally indicate that Pinterest is being loaded from multiple sources.

Remove duplicate installations and keep only one active Pinterest implementation.

Pinterest Ads Manager Shows No Activity

Verify:

  • The correct Tag ID is being used
  • Marketing consent was granted
  • Tracking requests are visible in Developer Tools
  • Pinterest scripts load successfully

Testing in an Incognito window is recommended.

โš ๏ธ Important Notes

Pinterest tracking responds specifically to the Marketing cookie category.

If Marketing consent is denied, Pinterest tracking remains disabled.

No Theme Coding Required

The integration automatically manages Pinterest loading and consent behavior.

No manual code edits are required after setup.

Avoid Duplicate Installations

Never load Pinterest simultaneously through:

  • Hoppy Cookie
  • Theme code
  • Another app
  • Custom tracking scripts

unless specifically configured to avoid duplicate tracking.

Google Tag Manager Uses a Different Setup

If Pinterest is loaded through Google Tag Manager:

โ†’ Use Google Consent Mode V2

The Pinterest Consent Mode integration is intended for direct Pinterest tag installations.

๐ŸŽ‰ Final Result

Once configured successfully:

โœ… Pinterest tracking only loads when Marketing consent is granted

โœ… Visitors who decline Marketing cookies are not tracked

โœ… Consent changes automatically update tracking behavior

โœ… Pinterest advertising measurement remains available after consent

โœ… No manual theme coding is required

โœ… Tracking behavior stays aligned with your Cookie Banner preferences

The Pinterest Consent Mode integration helps merchants balance advertising performance and visitor privacy by ensuring Pinterest tracking only becomes active after appropriate consent has been provided.
