🎯 Advanced Targeting Options for Upsell & Cross Sell

Want to show the right upsell to the right customer at the right moment? ⏰

That’s exactly what the Advanced Targeting options in Hoppy Upsell & Cross Sell are designed for.

With targeting, you can control:

  • 👤 Which customers see your upsell
  • 🛒 Which cart conditions must be met
  • 🌍 Which countries the offer appears in
  • ⏳ When the widget appears on the page

This helps you keep offers relevant, avoid showing upsells to the wrong audience, and create more personalized shopping experiences ✨

📍 Where to Find Targeting Settings

All targeting options live inside the Placement tab of your upsell setup.

To open them:

  1. Open the Hoppy Upsell & Cross Sell app
  2. Create a new upsell, or open an existing one from the dashboard
  3. Click the Placement tab at the top of the setup page

The Placement tab contains several targeting cards:

  • Display On (Include) → which pages show the upsell
  • Don’t display On (Exclude) → which pages never show it
  • Display only when → conditions that must be met first
  • Time-on-site targeting → show instantly or after a delay
  • Customer targeting → login status, tags, and spend rules
  • Geolocation targeting → country-based visibility

This guide walks through each of them ⚙️

✅ Before You Begin

A few things worth knowing before configuring targeting:

  • 📝 Create your upsell first (products, title, button) inside the Content tab — targeting only controls where and when it shows, not what it shows.
  • 💾 Targeting changes are only applied after you click Save using the save bar at the top.
  • 🚀 The upsell must be Published for targeting rules to take effect on your storefront.
  • 🔁 All enabled targeting rules work together. A customer must pass every active rule before the upsell appears.

🛍️ Step 1 — Choose Where the Upsell Displays (Include)

The Display On (Include) dropdown controls which pages your upsell appears on.

For Product Page and Custom upsells, you can choose:

  • All products → shows on every product page
  • Specific products → shows only on the products you select
  • All products in specific collections → shows on any product inside the selected collections
  • All products with specific tags → shows on products carrying the tags you enter
  • Custom position → place the widget manually using the theme editor or a code snippet

For Cart Page and Cart Drawer upsells, the widget is tied to the cart area, with an optional Custom position.

ℹ️ When you pick Specific products or All products in specific collections, a picker button appears so you can choose the exact products or collections. For All products with specific tags, a text field appears instead — type the product tags separated by commas and click Add. At least one selection (or tag) is required before you can save.

💡 Choosing Custom position reveals your Upsell ID and a ready-to-paste code snippet after saving. Custom placement works on product and cart pages only. See 🔎 How to Find Upsell ID? for the full walkthrough.

🚫 Step 2 — Exclude Pages Where It Should Never Show (Exclude)

Sometimes you want an upsell almost everywhere — but not everywhere.

The Don’t display On (Exclude) section handles that.

Available options:

  • Don’t exclude any product page (default)
  • Don’t show on product pages in specific collections → pick entire collections to hide the upsell from
  • Don’t show on specific product pages → pick individual products to hide it from

Example Use Cases

  • Hide accessories upsells from gift-card products
  • Skip products already included in a bundle
  • Avoid showing upsells on clearance or final-sale items

💡 Exclusions always win. If a page matches both an Include rule and an Exclude rule, the upsell will not show.

⚙️ Step 3 — Set “Display Only When” Conditions

The Display only when card lets the upsell appear only when certain cart or customer conditions are met.

✅ Always Display

The default option — the upsell shows whenever your other targeting rules pass.

⚠️ Important: When Always Display is checked, all other conditions in this section are disabled. Uncheck it first to build conditional rules.

⚠️ If you uncheck Always Display without enabling any other condition, saving is blocked with a “Select at least one enable condition.” error — at least one condition must always be active.

🧾 Minimum Number of Orders

Show the upsell only to customers who have already placed at least X orders in your store.

Useful when you want to reward repeat buyers with exclusive offers 🎁

  • Check the box
  • Enter the minimum order count in the field that appears

✨ Show Once Per Customer

Show the upsell only to customers who have never placed an order before — perfect for first-purchase incentives like “Add this bestseller to your first order”.

💰 Cart Value Is Below (Set Max Cart Value)

Show the upsell only while the cart total is at or below a maximum amount.

  • Check the box
  • Enter the maximum cart value in the $ field that appears

Example

Set the max cart value to $50. A customer with a $38 cart sees the upsell — but once their cart passes $50, it disappears.

ℹ️ Note: The cart value is evaluated when the page loads. If a customer adds an item via an AJAX cart drawer without a full page refresh, the upsell visibility won't update until they navigate to a new page or reload.

This is great for encouraging smaller carts to add just one more item, without distracting customers who are already spending big 📈

🕰️ Last Order Was More Than X Days Ago

Target customers who haven’t purchased recently — ideal for win-back style offers.

  • Check the box
  • Enter a number and choose the unit: Days, Weeks, or Months

ℹ️ Customers with no previous orders also pass this condition.

📅 Last Order Was Within the Last X Days

The opposite: target your most recent buyers while your brand is still fresh in their minds.

⚠️ Please note: Customers with no previous orders will not see the upsell when this condition is active — they have no “last order” to match.

⚠️ Important Note for Order-Based Conditions

Order-based conditions (such as minimum orders or last order date) rely on customer history. Because anonymous/logged-out visitors have no order history, they may unexpectedly pass or fail these conditions. For example, "Last order more than X days ago" will silently pass for all guests since they have no recent order on file.

To prevent guest visitors from seeing these offers incorrectly, we highly recommend combining these conditions with the "Logged in customers only" visibility setting (found under the Customer Targeting section).

🔄 Combining Conditions

You can enable multiple conditions at once — they all apply together (AND logic).

Example

  • Minimum number of orders: 2
  • Last order was within the last: 30 days

→ Only active, repeat customers from the past month see the upsell.

⚠️ If you combine both “last order” conditions, the “within the last X days” window must be longer than the “more than X days ago” window — otherwise saving is blocked with a validation error.

⏳ Step 4 — Configure Time-on-Site Targeting

The Time-on-site targeting card controls when the upsell appears after the page loads.

Two options:

  • Always Show (Default) → the widget appears as soon as the page loads
  • Show after a while → the widget appears only after a delay

When Show after a while is selected, a Delay (in seconds) field appears:

  • Enter any value from 1 to 300 seconds
  • The widget stays hidden until the timer finishes

Example

Set a 10-second delay so shoppers can first absorb the product page — then the upsell slides in once they’re engaged.

💡 Small delays (5–15 seconds) often feel more natural than instant popups, especially on product pages.

👤 Step 5 — Configure Customer Targeting

The Customer targeting card controls who sees your upsell based on login status, customer tags, and lifetime spend.

🔐 Visibility (Customer Login Status)

Choose who the upsell is visible to:

  • All visitors (default)
  • Logged in customers only → great for member-only offers
  • Logged out customers only → great for encouraging account creation or first purchases

🏷️ Customer Display

Control which customers are allowed to see the upsell:

  • All customers (default)
  • Customers with specific tag → a Tag field appears; enter the exact customer tag (e.g. VIP, Wholesale)
  • Customers with specific amount spent → an Amount field appears; enter the minimum lifetime spend in the $ field

Example

Display only to customers tagged VIP → your loyal shoppers get an exclusive upsell nobody else sees ✨

⚠️ Tags must match your Shopify customer tags exactly, including capitalization and spacing.

🙈 Customer Hide

The reverse of Display — hide the upsell from specific groups:

  • None (default)
  • Customers with specific tag → enter the tag to hide from
  • Customers with specific amount spent → enter the lifetime spend threshold; customers at or above it won’t see the upsell

Example Use Cases

  • Hide the upsell from Wholesale customers who already get special pricing
  • Stop showing entry-level upsells to customers who have already spent over $500

💡 If a customer matches both a Display rule and a Hide rule, the Hide rule wins and the upsell stays hidden.

🌍 Step 6 — Configure Geolocation Targeting

The Geolocation targeting card controls which countries your upsell appears in.

Two options:

  • All world (default) → no country restrictions
  • Specific countries → show only in the countries you choose

When Specific countries is selected:

  1. Click Select countries
  2. In the Country Selection popup, use the search bar to find countries quickly
  3. Check each country you want — or use Select All
  4. Review the Selected counter at the bottom
  5. Click Select to confirm

Your chosen countries appear as a list inside the card.

⚠️ Important: If you choose Specific countries but don’t select any country, you’ll see a “Select at least one country” error when saving.

ℹ️ The customer’s country is detected automatically from their browsing location — no VPN-proof guarantees, but reliable for the vast majority of shoppers.

Example Use Cases

  • Show a free-shipping add-on upsell only in countries where you ship affordably
  • Run a region-specific promotion (e.g. a UK-only bundle)
  • Hide upsells for products you can’t ship internationally

📌 Step 7 — Save & Publish

Once your targeting rules are configured:

  1. Click Save in the save bar at the top of the page
  2. Click Publish at the top of the page (if not already published)

Your targeting rules are now live on the storefront 🚀

⚠️ Important Notes & Common Pitfalls

  • 🔁 All rules stack together. If the upsell isn’t showing, one of your rules is filtering the customer out. Walk through each card and test with a customer who matches everything.
  • 👀 Test as the customer you’re targeting. Logged-in rules, tags, and spend rules only apply to real customer sessions — previewing as a guest won’t trigger them.
  • 🏷️ Tags are case-sensitive. vip and VIP are different tags.
  • 💰 Spend and cart values use your store currency.
  • 🚫 Exclude beats Include, and Hide beats Display — restrictions always win.
  • 🐢 Delays reset on every page load — the timer starts fresh each visit.

If your upsell still isn’t appearing after checking these, see Upsell & Cross Sell is Not Showing on My Store [Fixed] for a full troubleshooting checklist 🔧

🎉 Final Result

Once configured successfully:

✅ Upsells reach exactly the audience you choose
✅ Cart and order conditions keep offers relevant
✅ Geo-targeting keeps promotions region-appropriate
✅ Timed displays feel natural instead of pushy
✅ Personalized offers improve conversion and Average Order Value 📈

Well-configured targeting turns a generic upsell into a personalized shopping experience — and that’s where the real conversion lift happens ✨
