βοΈ How to Set Delivery Rates by Weight
Heavy orders cost more to deliver β so why charge the same for a 200 g parcel and a 20 kg one? π¦
The Delivery Rates By Weight rule lets you set a delivery charge based on the total weight of the order. Light carts get a cheap rate; heavy carts pay their fair share.
π Before You Begin
- β Youβve created a delivery zone β see How to Setup Delivery Rates and Zones?
- β Your products have weights set in Shopify (rates can only be as accurate as your product weights)
- β Youβve picked your Weight format in the General card on the Rates page
βοΈ Step 1 β Check Your Weight Format
β Go to Rates β General card β Weight format.
Choose the unit your store works in:
- Grams (g)
- Kilograms (kg)
- Pounds (lb)
- Ounces (oz)
π‘ Use the same unit you use for product weights in Shopify β that way your rule ranges line up with real order totals.
βοΈ Step 2 β Add a Weight Rule
β Click Edit on your zone β under Delivery Rates By Weight, click Add Rate By Weight.
Fill in:
- Delivery Rate Name β appears on the checkout page along with the charges (e.g.
Heavy Parcel Delivery) - Delivery Rate Description β appears on the checkout page along with the name
- Delivery Rate β the amount to charge (set 0 for free delivery)
- Minimum Order Weight β the lowest total order weight this rate applies to
- Maximum Order Weight β the highest total order weight this rate applies to
β οΈ All fields are required β use a very high maximum if thereβs no upper limit.
Example Setup
- Rate 1 β
βΉ40for orders from0to5 - Rate 2 β
βΉ120for orders from5to50
β Click Add, then Add Zone / Update Zone, then Save in the save bar.
βΉοΈ Good to Know
- βΉοΈ The rule compares against the total weight of all items in the cart, not per product.
- βΉοΈ Weight rules are checked after price rules and before product, time, day, and multi condition rules in the same zone.
- π‘ Overlapping ranges are fine β the first matching rule wins β but non-overlapping tiers are easier to reason about.
π Final Result
Once saved:
β
Delivery charges scale with how heavy the order is
β
Light orders stay cheap, heavy orders cover their cost
β
The weight unit matches your storeβs Weight format setting
Your weight-based delivery rates are live π
