βš–οΈ How to Set Delivery Rates by Weight

Heavy orders cost more to deliver β€” so why charge the same for a 200 g parcel and a 20 kg one? πŸ“¦

The Delivery Rates By Weight rule lets you set a delivery charge based on the total weight of the order. Light carts get a cheap rate; heavy carts pay their fair share.

πŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • βœ… You’ve created a delivery zone β€” see How to Setup Delivery Rates and Zones?
  • βœ… Your products have weights set in Shopify (rates can only be as accurate as your product weights)
  • βœ… You’ve picked your Weight format in the General card on the Rates page

βš™οΈ Step 1 β€” Check Your Weight Format

β†’ Go to Rates β†’ General card β†’ Weight format.

Choose the unit your store works in:

  • Grams (g)
  • Kilograms (kg)
  • Pounds (lb)
  • Ounces (oz)

πŸ’‘ Use the same unit you use for product weights in Shopify β€” that way your rule ranges line up with real order totals.

βš™οΈ Step 2 β€” Add a Weight Rule

β†’ Click Edit on your zone β†’ under Delivery Rates By Weight, click Add Rate By Weight.

Fill in:

  • Delivery Rate Name β†’ appears on the checkout page along with the charges (e.g. Heavy Parcel Delivery)
  • Delivery Rate Description β†’ appears on the checkout page along with the name
  • Delivery Rate β†’ the amount to charge (set 0 for free delivery)
  • Minimum Order Weight β†’ the lowest total order weight this rate applies to
  • Maximum Order Weight β†’ the highest total order weight this rate applies to

⚠️ All fields are required β€” use a very high maximum if there’s no upper limit.

Example Setup

  • Rate 1 β†’ β‚Ή40 for orders from 0 to 5
  • Rate 2 β†’ β‚Ή120 for orders from 5 to 50

β†’ Click Add, then Add Zone / Update Zone, then Save in the save bar.

ℹ️ Good to Know

  • ℹ️ The rule compares against the total weight of all items in the cart, not per product.
  • ℹ️ Weight rules are checked after price rules and before product, time, day, and multi condition rules in the same zone.
  • πŸ’‘ Overlapping ranges are fine β€” the first matching rule wins β€” but non-overlapping tiers are easier to reason about.

πŸŽ‰ Final Result

Once saved:

βœ… Delivery charges scale with how heavy the order is
βœ… Light orders stay cheap, heavy orders cover their cost
βœ… The weight unit matches your store’s Weight format setting
